Council confirms commitment to reduce carbon
Winchester City Council has chosen an electric car to replace a petrol pool-car used by staff for business across the district.
The BMWi3 is 2014 World Green Car of the Year. It has a range of 100 miles or up to 186 miles with the ‘range extender’ – essential for a large rural district where staff such as planning officers need to make longer journeys in the course of their work.
It has zero emissions when it is run on electric and has a small petrol engine as back-up to prevent drivers from being stranded on longer journeys.
Cllr Patricia Stallard, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Health & Wellbeing, said:
I am delighted that we are leading by example and continuing our commitment to reduce carbon emissions across our district by replacing a petrol car with an electric one. I hope other local businesses will follow our example. Choosing a greener solution where it is available has to make sense from both an environmental and business perspective.
The Council already has an all-electric Mitsubishi Miev.
There are a number of charging points for electric vehicles in the district: Winchester City Council will expand its charging network to include ‘fast’ charging points at Chesil Multi Storey and other suitable locations in the coming year.
The secure charging point at the Guildhall Yard in Winchester is available for the public to use at weekends.
