Winchester District Sports Awards 2014

The Winchester District Sport and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) held its seventh annual sports awards at Winchester Holiday Inn on Thursday 13 February.

The 14 different award categories aim to recognise publicly the commitment and excellence of coaches, volunteers, and sportsmen and women across the Winchester District and celebrate their successes throughout 2014.

The awards were hosted by local radio presenter, Jez Clark, from The Breeze breakfast radio show.

The evening included special guest speakers Thomas Hassler and Lee Grant who cycled from Winchester to Sweden raising over £7,500 for charity. Lee and Thomas were then presented with an award for outstanding personal achievement and given a £50 donation to their charities.

The evening also saw how local funding had been used to set up new dance sessions for charity acting and dance organisation Blue Apple Theatre as they performed one of their dance routines.

This year the awards moved to the Holiday Inn, Winchester, and saw over 200 people in attendance.

Cllr Rob Humby, Leader of Winchester City Council, said:

The Sports Awards is a fantastic evening and chance for us to showcase all that is great in terms of sport across the Winchester District. I would like to thank and congratulate everyone involved in staging the event.

Amanda Ford, Head of Sport & Physical Activity, said:

The speakers we had this year were inspirational and their stories will undoubtedly leave positive messages with our guests who all selflessly give up so much of their time.

Lawrence Blair, Chair of the Winchester District SPAA, added:

This has been a fantastic Awards Ceremony to mark my first as chair of the Winchester District SPAA. The calibre of nominations this year was fantastic and made picking a winner a tough job but as the night showed the achievements of all of our nominees are something special and they are all worthy of praise! The awards conclude another incredible year for the SPAA partners who have been working extremely hard to deliver important initiatives and will continue to drive sporting opportunities. Well done to all involved."
Individual awards were sponsored by local partners and organisations who have helped to financially support the event and ensure a that a first class evening could be delivered.
