Trash to Treasure exhibition marks launch of The Great Waste
An exhibition called Trash to Treasure will be opened officially at Winchester Discovery Centre on Friday 6 March by Deputy Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Angela Clear, in front of an audience of invited guests.
The exhibition displays objects from around the world made by resourceful recyclers, including toys, jewellery, clothes and more, showcasing what can be done when waste materials are used as resources. For example it features a tin can robot from Madagascar and paper jewellery from Uganda.
The exhibition marks the beginning of The Great Waste, a year-long initiative which will challenge the way people see waste, encouraging them to waste less and increase their recycling. Winchester households produce on average two-thirds of a tonne of waste a year but only send 34% to be recycled when up to 70% could be recycled.
The exhibition launch also features performance, music and activities including The Wasters! student group from the University of Winchester, Firefly theatre group and The Junk Orchestra.
The exhibition, which runs for six weeks in the Hampshire Cultural Trust City Space Gallery, includes a space where visitors can make their own treasures from trash, interactive activities and an opportunity to share ideas about waste prevention on the ‘Waste Not Wall’. Trash to Treasure is open Saturday 7 March 2015 to Sunday 19 April 2015 at City Space in the Winchester Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester, and it is free to enter.

The Great Waste initiative is a partnership between Winchester City Council and Winchester Action on Climate Change. Activities and events will be running around the district including Swap & Swish, Love Food Hate Waste events and RE:Workshops where people can learn a skill to reduce waste.
