Animal Welfare Team wins an award

Congratulations to Winchester City Council’s Animal Welfare Team – May Carrington and Dave Griffiths for winning the prestigious RSPCA Silver footprint award.

The Council has been awarded with the RSPCA Silver footprint award for their Stray Dog Services. They collect in the region of 200 strays a year. In most cases the team are able to reunite the dogs with their owners. However, about 40% are not reclaimed and our Animal Welfare Team work tirelessly to ensure that the dogs get a better future, arranging places for them in rehoming centres/ foster care or adoption.

Frank Pearson, Portfolio Holder for Environment, Health and Wellbeing, said:

We are delighted to win this award as it not only recognises the hard work and commitment our staff have to animal welfare, but it also demonstrates that our service is really valued by the RSPCA.

In April 2016, microchipping will be a legal requirement, which will hopefully help to reunite dogs with their owners more expediently.
