Dogs have chips in Denmead
Dog-owners took advantage of a free microchipping event in Denmead this week to get ready for new regulations that come into force in 2016.
The event was run by Dave Griffiths and May Carrington of Winchester City Council’s Animal Welfare Team at Denmead Community Centre on Wednesday 26 August from 10am to 4pm.
Around 20 dogs were microchipped at the event, making a total of 45 over two recent sessions.
Under the Microchipping of Dogs Regulations 2015, every keeper of a dog that is not microchipped has until 6 April 2016 to microchip their dog and register with an approved database.
The Dogs’ Trust, the Blue Cross and other local businesses and charities were also in attendance, providing educational talks, games and giveaways. Donations made by owners on the day will go to the Dogs’ Trust.
From 6 April 2016 keepers must ensure that all dogs over eight weeks of age are microchipped and registered with an approved microchip database and that, where a dog is transferred, the new keeper must update the details straight away.
The Animal Welfare Team is still available to carry out free microchipping. Interested owners should contact the team on 01962 848350 or ehealth@winchester.gov.uk to find the next available time. The procedure usually takes no more than 20 minutes.
