'Poppin Ron' to perform at Step Up! Winchester
Press Release: 02/05/2014
Falah Hassan, known as 'Poppin Ron', will be performing and judging at the Step Up! Winchester dance competition on Sunday 11 May at Guildhall Winchester.
In May 2013 Southampton-based dance sensation, Falah Hassan, made it to the semi-finals of Britain’s Got Talent with his street dance performance. He fled his native Syria with his brother in 2004 and was fostered in Southampton and began to dance and now runs dance classes in the city.
Winchester City Council’s Step Up! Winchester dance competition challenges local people of all ages to take up dance and become healthier in the process.
The Council has matched local ‘VIPs’ who have no dance experience with six dance schools from across the Winchester District. They are hard at work learning one routine, each in a different style of dance. At the big finale on 11 May at Guildhall Winchester, the judges and a voting audience will identify the winner.
First to step up for the challenge was Professor Joy Carter, Vice Chancellor of the University of Winchester. She will perform a rock and roll number with Platform School of Dance.
James Cretney, Chief Executive from Marwell Wildlife in Colden Common, will be dancing with NuTango who teach Argentine Tango.
David Gibbons from Denplan, one of Winchester’s largest private sector employers, will be learning West Coast Swing with Silvia from Salsa y Sol.
Also from the local business community is Jane Fish, Managing Director of the Ministry of Fish, Marketing and Advertising Agency. She will be stepping up with Integr8 Dance, who inspire young people through street dance.
A duo from The Carroll Centre in Stanmore - Eloisa Broadbent and Kat Goodchild - will be picking up some essential hip-hop moves with The Firefly Theatre School.
And finally, Jade Moses and Chandler Divers, apprentices from Winchester City Council, have opted for an ensemble routine choreographed by Roynon Dance.
Eloise Appleby, Assistant Director (Economy and Communities) for Winchester City Council, said:
We are really pleased that 'Poppin Ron' will be performing at our Step Up! Winchester dance competition. His unique weightless style of technical street dance should inspire the young audience to take up dance. He will also join the judging panel with Cathy Seago, a lecturer in dance from the University of Winchester and the Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Ernie Jeffs.
