Bishop’s Waltham Launches ‘Totally Locally’ and Celebrates its Independents

Every year across the UK, thousands of small independent retailers come together on 4 July to celebrate all that is great about being an independent on their local high street.
Having successfully launched the National Skills Academy for Retail’s Independents’ Day initiative last year, the hidden gem of the rolling Hampshire countryside, Bishop’s Waltham, is going one step further this year by launching their ‘Totally Locally’ campaign on the same day.
Designed specifically to embrace local and satellite communities, the Totally Locally campaign will focus on a simple core message – spend locally and regularly in Bishop’s Waltham’s wide variety of independent shops rather than online or in the large chains and supermarkets, and very quickly, this simple, subtle change will start to make a huge difference to the local area and economy.

The new Totally Locally campaign will continue on from 4 July, 7 days a week, 365 days a year and will showcase and celebrate the town’s heritage and independent businesses and shops, continually giving locals a reason to shop in Bishop’s Waltham and reminding them of all the great things that are right on their doorstep.
Totally Locally sets out to change public perception and shopping habits so that people look forward to spending money in their local shops instead of elsewhere. If every adult in Bishop’s Waltham and surrounding villages spent just £5 with their local independent shops and businesses, instead of online or with the big supermarkets, it would be worth an extra £2.5m to our local economy. And what does that mean in real terms? It means more jobs, better facilities and a nicer place to live and work for us all.

Last year’s Independents Day event was organised by Winchester City Councils Market Towns Development Officer, Heidi Isa, however the Bishop’s Waltham Chamber of Trade has taken on the task of organising the event themselves this year. Heidi said,
