Julian Eardley

An exhibition that brings the magic and mystery of theatre to City Space at the Winchester Discovery Centre takes place from Saturday 12 July to Sunday 7 September.

Putting on a Show features everything from pantomime props to pantomime dames and is part of celebrations to mark the 100th anniversary of the Winchester Theatre Royal.

The free summer exhibition includes quizzes, puzzles and art activities. With things to draw, try on and even smell, Putting on a Show has something for all the family.

Kate Raines, Head of Communications at the Theatre Royal, said:

In its 100th anniversary year the Theatre Royal is delighted to be working with Winchester City Council's Museums service to tell the fascinating behind-the-scenes story of Putting on a Show. The magical power of story-telling and transformation touches many people from the youngest to the oldest. The exhibition will give some fantastic insights into the process of bringing stories to the stage.

Drop in to the Discovery Centre on Monday 18 August between 10am and 4pm and make your own George and the Dragon figures from a Medieval ‘Mummers’ play. Follow the original script or make up you own. Will St George triumph or will the Dragon live to fight another day? It’s up to you! This free drop-in activity is suitable for children 8+. All materials are provided although parental supervision is required at this event.

During the exhibition free behind-the-scenes tours of the Theatre Royal are on offer on Wednesday 30 July, Wednesday 6 August, and Wednesday 20 August. All tours start at 11am in the Putting on a Show exhibition in City Space in the Winchester Discovery Centre and last approximately 45 minutes.

Places are limited so please book early at the City Space desk in the exhibition or telephone 01962 873 610 during City Space opening hours.

City Space is open Monday – Friday 10am-6pm, Saturday 10am-5pm and Sunday 11am-3pm. Closed Bank Holidays.
