Bishop’s Waltham Town Team is inviting residents and visitors to come and enjoy a jam-packed week of foodie events in the town starting on 14 July.

‘Bishop’s Waltham: Come Dine with Us’ has been arranged by Market Towns Development Officer, Heidi Isa, as part of the Town Team’s commitment to increasing footfall and developing the town centre as a social hub. More than 10 food-related businesses from Bishop’s Waltham are taking part in the week-long programme with events ranging from barbecue tastings to food and beer matching and cookery demonstrations.

An important part of the event has been the involvement of Bishop’s Waltham Infant and Junior schools. Infant school children have come up with cake, sandwich and biscuits designs, with the winning entries being recreated for a special ‘Waltham Tea’ to be served at five cafes around town on Saturday 19 July.

Year 3 children from the junior school have worked hard on designing a recipe for a summer salad, with four winning salads being put on the menu in five Bishop’s Waltham Restaurants. Their challenge was to incorporate one of the fish which they tasted at an earlier workshop run by local food economist Davina Tibbetts with the help of fishmonger Pete Atkinson and Billingsgate Seafood School. The salads were judged by a panel of four including Dizzie Bruce from the Barleycorn Inn, which will be serving two of the winning salads.

She said:

The children had put in so much work and had come up with some excellent combinations of ingredients. It was really hard to choose a winner, but we’re really looking forward to having two of the delicious winning salads on our menu.

The rest of the Junior School was invited to take part in a poster competition and three winning posters are now up around the town promoting the event.

Tony Kippenberger, Chairman of the Town Team, said:

By involving the schools in Town Team events, it really pulls together the community and connects everyone with the high street. We hope that residents and visitors alike will take this opportunity to sample all the culinary delights that Bishop’s Waltham has to offer.

‘Bishop’s Waltham: Come Dine with Us’ runs from 14-19 July. For more information see or pick up a programme from a restaurant or food retailer in Bishop’s Waltham.
