Winchester City Council is working with the Business Collective to put on a ‘taster session’ for job-seekers and those wishing to pursue a new career in catering. The event will take place on Wednesday 7 May at 5pm at Trinity Winchester in Durngate.

Those attending will be able to discover for free the varied roles open to them in the catering industry from chefs to front-of-house management as well as meeting prospective employers and training providers. There will be a chance to meet those who started at the bottom and have worked their way up to be become managers of five-star destination hotels.

Kate Hughes from the Cook Academy in Alresford, which provides catering training and corporate team-building events, will offer would-be chefs the opportunity to join in with her live cookery demonstration. There will also be a presentation by Grant Callaghan, General Manager of Hotel du Vin in Winchester, who will talk about his rise to become manager of this luxury hotel chain and what it takes to reach the top.

Eloise Appleby, Assistant Director for Economy and Communities at Winchester City Council, said:

Winchester enjoys a growing reputation as a foodie destination endorsed by the size and popularity of its thriving monthly farmers’ markets and Hugh Fernley-Whittingstall choosing the city for his next River Cottage restaurant. The hospitality industry is an ever-expanding part of the service sector, and one which is providing an increasing number of local employment opportunities.

Joanna Humphrey from the Business Collective, a Winchester-based network of organisations pooling and exchanging their resources with the aim of helping to build their local economic and social wellbeing, added:

The industry is growing by the day and as long as people need to eat, it will continue. Because of widening consumer choices and interests there are now many different jobs that come under the umbrella of the food and catering industry.
