Call for more businesses to join green scheme

Press Release: 26/09/2013

More businesses are being urged to join a scheme which is helping to make the Winchester District a greener, cleaner place to live and work.

The Carbon Smart Winchester Certification Programme has seen more than 100 local businesses join in its first year and benefit from new environmental credentials while helping to develop the area’s low-carbon economy.

Now Winchester City Council and the Carbon Smart Programme are inviting new businesses to sign up as they launch the second year of the scheme.

Cllr Rob Humby, Deputy Leader of Winchester City Council, said:

The Carbon Smart Winchester Programme had a fantastic first year and assisted a number of local businesses to improve their environmental performance and receive Carbon Smart Winchester Certification. This year I hope to see many more businesses seizing the opportunity to sign up to the scheme and contributing to making Winchester a greener place for all.

Matt Gilks of Dutton Gregory Solicitors in Winchester said:

Participating in Carbon Smart has changed the way we think about our business. Thinking green makes business sense! The contribution of Carbon Smart to our environmental programme has been invaluable.

This year the programme aims to build on the achievements of businesses that are already signed up to the scheme by helping them take further steps to develop their environmental credentials and achieve the next level of Carbon Smart certification. Carbon Smart hopes that 50 new businesses will join the initiative. By developing a green action plan to identify business-related savings, participants will be on their way to reducing monthly utility bills and attaining the first level of Carbon Smart Certification.

Taking into account feedback from year one participants, Carbon Smart has designed year two to be even more flexible, with the majority of the service provided remotely either over the telephone or via email. Workshops are designed to make sure that everyone taking part gets the most out of the fun and engaging sessions. The programme offers consultant-level support at no cost. All participants have the opportunity to network with other like-minded businesses at the initial workshops and are invited to exchange valuable knowledge or ideas on how best to tackle the environmental challenges faced by businesses today.

The programme offers clear, practical and motivational advice to improve environmental and operational performance. It also offers Carbon Smart Winchester Certification, a nationally-recognised environmental accreditation which has benefited over 1,000 businesses. The award can be used to promote a business in marketing material, on websites and in tenders - proving that progress with environmental impacts not only leads to financial savings, but can help win new business too.
