ARTFUL’ exhibition at City Space
Press Release: 13/05/2013
City Space gallery in the Winchester Discovery Centre will be hosting work by local artists’ group ARTFUL from Saturday 18 May until Sunday 9 June.
ARTFUL was formed in 2011 and comprises a group of independent artists and makers who regularly join forces to exhibit their work. The colourful and abstract paintings of Claudine Mitaty are inspired by dancers drawn from life and capture the emotion, spirit and dynamic movement of dance in various forms while Raziye Parmley’s oil paintings are an intimate portrayal of urban living, drawn from childhood memories. These are sometimes colourful abstractions while others reflect more muted domestic settings where objects spill out into the landscape.
Gill Robinson’s recent paintings stem from a fascination with landscape. Her new Microcosmos series explores elements of its physical formation in miniature, while her larger paintings reflect its constant transformation by nature and human agency.
Local artist, Alan Cracknell, also has a fascination with landscape and the past reflected in his incredibly detailed and colourful artworks often incorporating archaeological artefacts. Lindsey Mann’s jewellery designs also reference the past, in her case evocative personal memories, from her Granny’s sewing box to family Sunday drives. Her pieces incorporate colour, pattern, text, imagery, shapes and layers, using techniques she has explored and developed to create a unique style.
Geoff Denford, Head of Museums at Winchester City Council, said:
I am delighted that City Space has the opportunity to showcase the work of this very talented group of artists who couldn’t be more local, highlighting yet again the range and quality of work produced by members of Winchester’s dynamic and highly regarded creative community .
So why not celebrate the start of summer by coming along to this vibrant, colourful, inspiring and free exhibition. ARTFUL is open from Saturday 18 May until Sunday 9 June but please note that Winchester Discovery Centre will be closed on Bank Holiday Monday 27 May.
