Next stage for Winchester’s new events space
Press Release: 18/03/2013
Artists, craftspeople and manufacturers are being invited to express interest in designing and making a portable events space for the Winchester District.
Individuals and organisations have until Friday 5 April to submit expressions of interest to Winchester City Council for the £20,000 commission.
A shortlist of makers will then be asked to submit detailed designs for the new space.
Cllr Patricia Stallard, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities, Culture and Sport, said:
This commission provides an opportunity to reinforce local pride in the District’s long tradition of public art as part of its historic street scenes, as well as its growing reputation as a creative centre in the south.
A tailor-made, portable event space for the Winchester District will reflect the many community celebrations which characterised the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in the summer of 2012 and act as a lasting reminder of that special year.
The Winchester District lacks informal spaces which provide cover and visibility for performers, speakers and small group activities such as workshops and the portable event space will meet that need.
The brief is for the event space to be a feature in its own right and to be sympathetic to Winchester’s heritage and environment. It also needs to be easily transportable so that towns and villages across the District can book it for use as part of the many local fetes, events and celebrations that take place each year.
