Winchester Station plans on track

Press Release: 25/06/2013

Plans to improve the important area close to the railway station in Winchester are on track with the launch of a study into the options.

Winchester City Council is commissioning a development plan assessment which will look at the potential for the location, aiming to maximise the economic benefits for the city. A report to Cabinet is scheduled for October.

New high-quality jobs and an improved gateway to the city are among the key aims of the work. Suitable parking for businesses and commuters is also a crucial element of any plans.

The City Council is working closely with Network Rail, Hampshire County Council and other partners and will consult with local stakeholders as part of the process.

Cllr Keith Wood, the Leader of Winchester City Council, said: “There is great potential to improve the area around the railway station in a way that dramatically enhances one of the most important entrances to Winchester while also boosting the city’s economy.

Our assessment of the development potential for the Andover Road area will show us what options are available and inform our decisions in the coming months.
