City Council recruits more apprentices
Press Release: 24/07/2013
More young people will get their first step on the career ladder thanks to a new batch of apprenticeships offered by Winchester City Council this summer.
The Council is doubling the size of its apprentice scheme to 20 for 2013-14, following its success with 10 apprentices last year and two the year before.
The scheme will offer roles for the first time in areas such as sport, economy and arts, and communications as well as a wide range of other areas including customer service, finance, human resources, housing, building control, health and well-being, business support, community grants, revenue and benefits, major projects, policy and the Guildhall.
Cllr Stephen Godfrey, Portfolio Holder for Finance & Organisational Development for Winchester City Council, said:
Our apprenticeship scheme goes from strength to strength. The apprentices have achieved nationally-recognised qualifications, invaluable experience and more than half have taken up permanent jobs with us so far.Meanwhile the apprenticeships have provided an opportunity and funding for the Council to bring in new staff despite difficult economic circumstances and to equip them with the skills and experience needed for a career in a modern customer-focused organisation.Employing local young people when it is very difficult for them to find good jobs also encourages these enthusiastic and talented people to take up careers in public service.
Griff Wood, an apprentice in the Democratic Services team at the City Council, said:
Working for Winchester City Council has been an experience like no other for me, in which I take genuine pride in the work I do and feel like an equal member of the team. As well as finding security in my job I am learning as well, working towards my NVQ2 in Business Administration to really help kick-start my career.
The apprentices will complete work-based and day-release training giving them valuable work experience and a nationally-recognised qualification. For more information and to apply please visit www.hampshirejobs.org.uk
