Carbon Smart Winchester celebrates over 100 certified businesses

Press Release: 24/07/2013

Carbon Smart 100 celebration

Some of the greenest businesses across the Winchester District gathered together to celebrate their Carbon Smart Winchester status this week. The event celebrated the first 100 businesses to be accredited under the scheme, which recognises efforts made to improve environmental performance.

The event was held at Holiday Inn Winchester, itself a Carbon Smart Winchester business for its innovatively-designed building. Guests were welcomed by Cllr Robert Humby, Deputy Leader of Winchester City Council, who congratulated everyone for taking part.

Cllr Humby, said:

Winchester City Council wants to help local businesses to take their environmental responsibilities seriously, and reap the financial rewards at the same time. The Carbon Smart Winchester scheme has been successful in making this happen, and we will continue to work with Carbon Smart to help other businesses do their bit for the environment too.

The scheme was launched in October 2012, with over 100 businesses taking part so far. The Carbon Smart team spend time learning about each business, and what their needs and aspirations are. They recognise that every business is different with its own identity and therefore concentrate on the areas which are realistic and will make a real difference. At the end of the programme, businesses will be presented with the Carbon Smart Winchester certification.

Louise Quarrell, Director of Carbon Smart, was delighted with the feedback from businesses at the event. She said:

We have really enjoyed working with such a diverse range of businesses across the whole District who have taken their environmental responsibilities seriously. We are looking forward to not only helping those businesses already accredited to continue their good work, but bringing even more Winchester businesses on board.

The Carbon Smart Winchester scheme is just one of the many ways in which Winchester City Council supports the local economy. The Council has also recently announced new grant funding streams for start-up businesses and for job-seekers. More information on all of this work is available at
