Press Release: 28/01/2013

Imber Road open-air gym

Still thinking about how to lose those extra Christmas pounds? Outdoor fitness equipment is about to be installed by Winchester City Council, offering free opportunities for local people to stay fit and active.

Locals can now exercise in the fresh air using low impact and resistance-based equipment. We hope it will be used by people of all ages who are looking to boost their health and fitness.

Winchester Town Open Space Fund has provided the new fitness area next to the play park at Imber Road in Winnall. You will be able to take regular exercise on the health walker, sit-up bench, power-push, pulldown challenger, handle-boat, push-hands, ski-stepper and mini-ski, all set on a soft surface.

Cllr Patricia Stallard, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport, said

As a Council we do all we can to improve the health and wellbeing of residents in our community. Some of the equipment is particularly important for older users; it improves flexibility and agility of joints.

Now there is no excuse not to keep fit whilst enjoying the great outdoors. We hope that residents will lead an active and healthy lifestyle while being able to socialise at the same time.

Cllr Roger Huxstep, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Environment, said

This fantastic new facility is free to use and at any time of the day, whatever the weather. It is a great use of space and will ensure that members of the community can be brought together in a positive and stimulating environment.

All the equipment is supplied with clear instructions and benefits explained for the user. The new equipment is targeted at everyone from teenagers to the older generation.
