A Change of Heart
Press Release: 04/02/2013
From Saturday 9 February to Sunday 3 March City Space in Winchester Discovery Centre will be hosting ‘A Change of Heart’, an exhibition by local artist Andrew Carnie.
The heart has historically been considered as the seat of emotion and the process of transplanting it raises many issues. These are at the core of a long-term study being undertaken at Toronto General Hospital Cardiac Unit, Canada.
Andrew has had access to this research and his work is a response to this material. This is the first tentative showing of the work to gauge a public response.
The research delves into the psychological well-being of the patients after transplant and in their own homes.
This exhibition offers a set of work, prints, watercolours and video projection, reflecting on the fascinating insights of this scientific research and asks the question: how does the research and imagery affect how we see and have a sense of ourselves?
Andrew’s interests have always bridged the fields of arts and science and resulted in collaboration with scientists in different fields and, in particular, the area of medical research.
He started off studying chemistry and painting at Warren Wilson College, North Carolina, and then zoology and psychology at Durham University before completing a degree in Fine Art at Goldsmiths College and a Masters in Painting at the Royal College of Art, London. He is a lecturer at the School of Art, Winchester.
Cllr. Patricia Stallard, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport for Winchester City Council, said
The opportunity to premier the latest work by an artist of Andrew Carnie’s standing is something of a coup for City Space, while the nature of Andrew’s work highlights the versatility of the gallery appreciated by exhibitors and visitors alike. The heart is such an evocative subject and holding the exhibition in February during National Heart Month and with Valentine’s Day just round the corner allows visitors the chance to think about the heart as a physical, emotional and cultural icon.
As February is National Heart Month we are offering visitors to the exhibition the opportunity to give their hearts a little gentle workout by joining one of our free Health Walks from the exhibition on Tuesday 12 and Tuesday 19 February. Starting at 10.30am both days, each walk lasts an hour (approx 2½-3 miles). To book a place call in at City Space or phone 01962 873 610.
To find out more about Health Walks in Winchester and across the District please contact Winchester City Council’s Active Lifestyles Officer, Lydia Lockhart, on 01962 848 725 or e-mail at firstname.lastname@example.org
To celebrate the arrival of ‘A Change Of Heart’ in City Space, Winchester Discovery Centre is offering visitors the opportunity to win a year’s Library DVD membership. There are eight poems placed around the Library that all refer to the heart: vote for your favourite for the opportunity to enter our Valentine’s Day prize draw. You have until 7pm on Wednesday 13 February to cast your vote.
Parents are advised that due to the nature of some of the images on display this exhibition may not be suitable for young children.
