World Book Day on Thursday 7 March sees the opening of ‘Books by Artists’, a new exhibition in City Space at the Winchester Discovery Centre until Sunday 14 April.

‘Books by Artists’ is an exhibition of work selected from the collection held by the University of Southampton Library at the Winchester School of Art. Visitors will be taken on a visual journey illustrating different approaches to content, materials and structure, covering topics such as places and journeys, photography and text, knitting and sewing.

The collection comprises about 1,500 books and dates from the conceptual art movement of the 1960s through to the present day including works by former Winchester School of Art students selected and acquired at final-year degree shows since the 1980s.

The books cover a wide variety of topics and approaches to making and materials and illustrate the flexibility and creative freedom that makes this fascinating art form so inspirational for many artists.

Cllr Patricia Stallard, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport for Winchester City Council, said

The proximity of City Space to the Library in the Discovery Centre makes it the perfect location for this exhibition. The idea of what constitutes a ‘ book’ and how people access and use books is going through a revolution at the moment and ‘Books by Artists’ offers visitors another perspective on the valuable role books still play in all our lives, whatever form they take.

From the start of the exhibition on World Book Day, Thursday 7 March, until it closes on Sunday 14 April there is an opportunity for people to drop in and make their own Art Book to take away or leave on display. All materials are provided and there will be plenty of wonderful exhibits to inspire visitors.

City Space is also offering visitors the opportunity to pop along and pick up a few expert tips at two workshops. Between 10am and 1pm on Friday 5 and 12 April people can drop in to Winchester Discovery Centre and learn how to make their own Art Book. The exhibition in City Space will provide plenty of wonderful books full of inspiration to get people started.

These free activities have been designed by students from Winchester School of Art and are suitable for age 8+. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

City Space opening times: Monday – Friday 10am – 6pm, Saturday 10am – 5pm, Sunday 11am – 3pm. Closed Bank Holidays. City Space, Winchester Discovery Centre, Jewry Street, Winchester SO23 8SB. Admission is free.
