Winchester to benefit from table tennis funding
Press Release: 07/08/2013
Table tennis participation across Winchester is set to soar thanks to funding for a new home for a local club.
South Wonston Table Tennis Club will soon move from its current location at the local village hall to Westgate School in the city.
The club has been working alongside Winchester City Council and the English Table Tennis Association (ETTA) to finance the project which is expected to cost around £10,000.
The bulk of funding - £7,500 - has been granted by Sport England through its small grants scheme, which will be used to help develop talent ID coaching sessions, female-only sessions and drop-in sessions for the local community as well as purchasing equipment.
Further funding has been sought from Winchester City Council’s own Small Grants Scheme and the club’s continued partnership work with the Sport & Physical Activity Team at Winchester City Council, delivering on initiatives such as the Hampshire Games and Ping! Hampshire last summer. The club will add the remaining finance to ensure the project goes ahead.
Cllr Robert Humby, Deputy Leader at Winchester City Council with portfolio responsibilities for sport, said:
This is exactly the kind of project we had anticipated the Small Grants Scheme being used for. It makes a difference to the local club and helps them achieve a bigger goal. Coupled with Sport England funding this investment will really help South Wonston Table Tennis Club expand. I am looking forward to seeing the new venue.
South Wonston Table Tennis Club has grown at an impressive rate in the build up to and beyond the London 2012 Olympic Games. In 2009 the club had around 15 junior members but now regularly sees 45 participants each week. The new home, equipment and sessions will help the club expand towards its aim of 100 junior members by December 2014. The club will also use the village hall for competitive league matches, maintaining its link with the village.
David Binns, Chairman of South Wonston Table Tennis Club, said:
The club has been developing well over the last few years and this funding is the start of our new vision. We are incredibly excited about developing the membership base here and would urge beginners and experienced participants, young and old, to get in contact and come and play.
My thanks to Paddy Shepherd, our head coach, who with help from Winchester’s Sport & Physical Activity Team, managed to secure the Sport England grant, making all this possible.
