A community cookery skills class aimed at men aged over 55 is being launched in Swanmore next month.

Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council are working in partnership to provide the six-week course which will help participants gain ideas and tips on preparing simple healthy meals.

The class will be held at Swanmore Village Hall, New Road, Swanmore starting on Monday 9 September and running for six weeks, 11.30am to 1pm, with an opportunity for refreshments afterwards.

The community cookery skills initiative has been successful in a number of areas across the county. Des Holyhead, who attended the course in Bishop’s Waltham, said:

My wife was going into hospital, so it was a case of either come on the course or starve!

In a friendly relaxed atmosphere those attending the course will learn:

  • How to cook a range of simple meals from start to finish
  • Food shopping ideas
  • Food hygiene and storage
  • The importance of healthy eating to health and well-being

All places must be booked in advance. Please contact Nicola Lawrence on 01962 848 083 or email

The six-week course costs just £1 per session and all ingredients are provided.
