Two more sites have been added to the list of Assets of Community Value in the Winchester District.

The Bishop’s Waltham Palace and Grounds in Bishop’s Waltham have been included on the list as a significant medieval landmark for the town and a valuable heritage site for the community.

A further nomination has also been accepted in Micheldever, with the King’s Country Stores (also known as Micheldever Stores) being recognised as a vital community facility.

The King’s Country Stores are currently on the market so Winchester City Council has started the second phase of the Community Right to Bid. This involves a six-week moratorium on the owners, which temporarily stops them signing a contract with a private buyer.

Any other eligible community interest group can now decide whether to become potential bidders for the stores. Once one group steps forward requesting to bid, the moratorium is extended to six months. This extra time allows the community to raise the required capital for their bid. Groups must contact the Council to express their interest by Tuesday 14 May.

To find out more about which groups are eligible to trigger a moratorium, please see our web pages or contact Antonia Perkins 01962 848 314 for further information.

The latest two additions brings the total number of assets on the list in the Winchester District to seven including a pub, a play area and a youth hut.

The Community Right to Bid scheme aims to provide local communities with the opportunity to recognise local amenities of great importance to the community and to safeguard against their loss. Winchester City Council maintains a 'list of assets of community value' which are nominated successfully by local community groups. If any of the listed assets is put up for sale, the Council informs the community to give them time to consider bidding to take over the asset themselves as a community enterprise.
