Press Release: 17/09/2012

The apprentices are welcomed by Cllr Stephen Godfrey & Chief Executive Simon Eden.

Winchester City Council held a celebration event this week for its past and new apprentices.

Hayley Wall and Hannah Smith who have successfully completed their Customer Service Apprenticeships and were presented with their certificates by Cllr Stephen Godfrey, and were also celebrating being successful in achieving permanent jobs at the Council.

Cllr Stephen Godfrey portfolio holder for Finance and Administration, who has been instrumental in the success of the scheme at Winchester, said

We are very proud of the success of our apprenticeship schemes. Our first group have achieved nationally recognised qualifications, invaluable experience to start their careers in local government, and the icing on the cake - full time permanent jobs in the customer service centre.

The council has now built on this success with our second group of nine young people who are both helping us to deliver our priorities and getting a step on the career ladder. We also hope our experience will encourage other organisations and small to medium sized businesses within the District to recruit and train young people, and that our new grant scheme helps apprentices who are struggling to meet those initial costs of entering the working world.”

The new apprentices were welcomed this week to their new roles, which will be in a variety of teams within the Council, from finance to housing and human resources. They will complete a work based training program giving them valuable work experience and a nationally recognised qualification. The Council sees these opportunities as an important contribution to supporting young people looking for a first step on the career ladder, who are keen to make a positive start in the world of work.
