Work starts on new depot site in Winchester

Press Release: 20/11/2012

Cllr Keith Wood, Leader of Winchester City Council helps to start work at the new depot site in Barfield Close

Work has started on the development of a new Depot at Barfield Close, Winchester for Biffa and the Landscape Group, who undertake the delivery of the City’s refuse, street care and grounds maintenance services. The £2 million project is being managed on the Council’s behalf by Gentle Consulting and completion of the new facility is expected, weather permitting during July 2013.

Leader of the Council Cllr Keith Wood, helped get the site clearance underway. Cllr Wood commented,

The investment of £2 million in the development of the new Depot at Barfield Close demonstrates the Council’s commitment to improving the services it offers to residents, while achieving a sensible return for the Council tax payer. The scheme will result in the redevelopment of a run down industrial site, which in turn will release the old Depot site in Bar End Road for an alternative use, enabling this important gateway to the City to be improved in the future.

Stuart Atkinson Biffa’s Regional Support Manager reported that the Local Teams were very pleased that work had started on the Depot, he said

The new facility will enable both Biffa and the Landscape Group to operate the services provided for district residents more efficiently. Biffa will be making a considerable investment in fitting the vehicle workshops out through their partner Dennis Eagle, to ensure that the new freighter fleet is maintained to the highest environmental standards.
