In May this year Winchester Theatre Royal was host to BBC Radio 4 as part of Winchester City Council’s Best of British Festival. Martin Jarvis has become synonymous with Just William, and he recorded two of Richmal Crompton’s stories to a packed house of children, parents and grandparents.

They are now to be broadcast on the Sundays before and after Christmas, December 23 and 30, both at 7.15pm. The first tells of William’s attempt to hijack the role of Hamlet in the school play; the second how William and the Outlaws cut a precocious young boy visitor down to size.

The Festival’s Artistic Director John Miller said, “The show packed out Winchester Theatre Royal back in May, and those who couldn’t get tickets for this comic treat will now be able to hear what they missed, and many of those who did may well want to hear the performances again.”

Cllr Robert Humby, Portfolio Holder for the Economy and Arts and Tourism added, “We are delighted that the broadcast, arranged as a highlight of Winchester City Council’s Best of British Festival for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, has been given these prized slots during the Christmas holiday. The festival marked a coming together of the private and public sector in order to support the local economy and offer our community an opportunity to celebrate a national event. Approximately 12,000 residents and visitors attended events on the programme.”
