New Bikeabout hire scheme to get more people on two wheels

Press Release: 11/06/2012

A new bike hire service run by Winchester’s Bikeabout scheme is being launched to help residents and visitors explore the sights of Winchester on two wheels.

The Bikeabout hire scheme will be launched on 16 June 2012 to coincide with Bike Week. Ten brand new bikes are available to be hired out daily by visitors and residents, after the scheme received funding from the Department of Transport’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund.

Cllr Vicki Weston Portfolio Holder for Planning and Transport, said,

The Bikeabout scheme has been given a new lease of life thanks to funding from the local sustainable transport fund. Cycling is an increasingly popular way for people to explore places and Winchester is the perfect setting to try it out. We hope that that these new bikes will inspire more people to explore the City on two wheels and maybe even continue to cycle more often once they have rediscovered how much fun it can be.”

The bikes can be hired from two outlets, Winchester's Tourist Information Centre located at the Guildhall or Winchester Shopmobility located on the upper parking level of The Brooks Shopping Centre car park. Users must be over 18 and have proof of identity with them, a deposit is also required.

The scheme will still continue to offer loan bikes to members on a short term basis.
