The chime is right for the Olympic Games

Press Release: 20/07/2012

National Bell ringing campaign

Winchester City Council Cabinet members and the local people they represent will be ringing bells at 8.12am on Friday 27 July 2012 on the steps of Guildhall Winchester to mark the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games. They will be joining thousands of people across the nation who at breakfast time will be celebrating what has been described by many as the Greatest Show on Earth.

Alison Woods, Economy and Arts Development Manager, at Winchester City Council said:

Anyone can take part, from church bell ringers to enthusiastic children with hand bells, bicycle bells and doorbells, by ringing any kind of bell for three minutes. Whether you’d like to join us on the steps of Guildhall Winchester or ring bells in your own communities we’d like to hear from you. We are not looking for musical talent – the idea is that the bells are rung as quickly and as loudly as possible for three minutes.”

To get involved all individuals, communities and organisations are encouraged to register at If you are a Winchester District based organisation you can also ‘like’ our ‘Ring In the London 2012 Olympic Games’ status on Winchester City Council’s Facebook page located at: If you would like to join the City Council bell ringing on the steps of Winchester Guildhall please contact Alison Woods at Winchester City Council on 01962 848 347 or email

Cllr Patricia Stallard, Winchester City Council’s 2012 Champion and Portfolio Holder for Communities, Culture and Sport added:

The sound of thousands of bells across the country ringing out at the same time to mark this historical moment will be a thrilling experience and a nationwide celebration. This is a fun way for our local communities to join in and mark the start of the games.”
