Press Release: 24/08/2012

Celebrating 2012’s fantastic year of sport across the Winchester District

Nominations are now being invited for the 5th Annual Sports Awards for the Winchester District.

After a fantastic year of sport, the Winchester District Sport and Physical Activity Alliance (SPAA) is asking local sports clubs, community organisations and residents to name the best of the District’s sporting talent as the build-up starts to the big award ceremony on Wednesday 5th December.

The awards which have grown year on year will be presented at a ceremony in Guildhall Winchester and aim to celebrate the achievements of Winchester’s sporting residents, both young and old. After the greatest show on earth graced our shores and the fantastic achievements of so many local people, 2012 is hoped to be the best ever awards ceremony with junior and senior awards now open for nominations. The ceremony will feature a special focus on this years events and it is hoped that the evening will have more celebrity speakers following from previous years which have included Olympic swimmer Julia Beckett, Rod Carr the Royal Yachting Association Chief Executive, Dervis Konarulp world record holding champion Paralympic swimmer, and Annabel Vose World Sailing Champion.

The awards aim to recognise publicly the commitment and excellence of coaches, volunteers, sportsmen and sportswomen across the Winchester District and clubs can request nomination packs now.

Last year nominations were received from Littleton Football Club, Winchester and District Athletics Club, Winchester Rugby Club, Winchester City Penguins Swimming Club, Winchester Gymnastics Club, Treasure Gymnastics Club, St Cross Symondians Cricket Club, South Wonston Table Tennis Club, Treloar School, Winchester City Basketball Club and Wykeham Squash Club to name a few. It is hoped that after the London 2012 Olympic & Paralympic Games many more clubs and organisations will have sports stories and nominees to put forward for local awards and will take the opportunity to submit nominations as the event continues to grow and reward those individuals and teams who commit so much of their time to sport in the Winchester District.

Nominations for awards will be considered in the following junior categories:
Sportsman of the Year
Sportswoman of the Year
Disability Sportsperson of the Year

All nominees must either be resident within the Winchester District or registered to, or working with, clubs based in the Winchester District. All entries must be supported by a written statement of no more than 250 words, explaining why you think the nominee deserves this recognition.

Cllr Patricia Stallard, Portfolio Holder for Communities, Culture & Sport at Winchester City Council said,

This year has provided us with a fantastic opportunity to show how brilliant Winchester is at recognising the benefits of sport. With the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games being such a great success this year’s sports awards will provide clubs and individuals with the chance to show how much they have done and celebrate their achievements. It will be a fantastic celebration of a special year and I would urge sports clubs, teachers, parents and coaches from across the District to nominate!”

Stuart Barlow, Chair of the SPAA, added,

Last year we had an incredible evening celebrating the successes of local sports people and this year will be no different. We would like to recognise even more achievements, from those who went to London 2012 to those who are preparing for future Olympics and those who are still driving Winchester sport forward. With more celebrity guests planned and more nominations from local people we can really showcase what has been an extraordinary and amazing year in sport.”

The closing date for entries is Monday 15th October 2012.
