Sun Shines for the Winnall BIG Spring Clean

Press Release: 17/04/2012

Winnall Litter Pickers

Winnall residents joined members of Winchester Litter Pickers to undertake a litter pick in Winnall on Wednesday 11 April.

Winnall Spring Clean, organised by Winnall Residents Forum in partnership with Winchester City Council Neighbourhood Wardens, A2 Dominion, Winchester Litter Pickers and TESCO, is the first of a number of events being held throughout Winchester as a part of National ‘Love Where You Live’ campaign promoted by Keep Britain Tidy.

On the day over 20 people young and old collected more than 15 bags of litter from roads, hedges and footpaths around Winnall. The young participants were also given the opportunity to plant sunflower seeds which will be judged later in the summer as part of a sunflower growing competition. Everyone’s hard work was rewarded with refreshments, provided by TESCO and A2 Dominion, and the satisfaction of seeing the full bags of litter that they had helped to collect.

Winchester Litter Pickers’ Chairman, David Jones said,

Today’s event just shows what can be achieved when the community pulls together.”

Robert Heathcock, Assistant Director for Winchester City Council said,

This is an excellent example of the community taking action to help itself by improving the environment in which they live. I applaud everyone who turned out on the day to contribute and their efforts will now benefit everyone who lives in the area. We will continue to support such initiatives because we recognise the significant value that they give.”
