Free Family Fun at Winchester Sports Festival – 20 May 2012

Press Release: 17/04/2012

Sports Festival 2012

To celebrate 100 days to go until the London 2012 Olympic Games (18 April) Winchester City Council is launching its Sports Festival, a free event which will take place this May.

Come along and discover a new sport, battle through a 300ft inflatable obstacle course, meet the Olympic Mascots and much more all for free.

On Sunday 20 May from 11am to 5pm, over 50 sports and fun activities will be available for all the family to try at Winchester Sports Stadium and Garrison Ground.

Local clubs from across the region will be showcasing a huge range of activities from football and tennis to street dance and stool ball - a cross between cricket, baseball and rounders.

Winchester Sports Festival forms part of Winchester City Council’s programme of events in the build up to the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, which includes the Torch Relay and Winchester Live, a giant screen at the Cathedral showing the Olympic and Paralympic Games live.

Amanda Ford, Head of Sports and Physical Activity, said:

The whole aim is to get people more active. We are hoping that families who are looking for a fun day out and want to try something new will come along.”

Visitors will also be able to meet the Olympic and Paralympic mascots, Wenlock and Mandeville, and Olympic athlete Christian Malcolm, Team GB Men’s Athletics Captain. A World Record Zone will also allow people to compare how their own sporting abilities match up to the world’s best.

Healthy food and drink stalls will be available at the site all day. Parking will also be free on the Sunday at the nearby park and ride stations at Barfield and St Catherine’s.

Other sports on show will include: rock climbing, table tennis, Zumba, martial arts, zorbing, cycling and mechanical horse riding.

The event, in partnership with the University of Winchester, will be held in the Winchester Sports Stadium and surrounding Garrison Ground, just off junction 10 of the M3.
