Mayor Appoints First Military Cadet
Winchester’s Mayor, Cllr Barry Lipscomb, has appointed Cadet Sgt James Townley to serve as his Mayor’s Cadet for one year. James, a pupil at Peter Symonds College, Winchester, serves with the King’s School Detachment of the Z Company (Winchester and North Hampshire).
Cllr Lipscomb said “This is a new initiative for Winchester’s ancient Mayoralty and I am absolutely delighted to have been able to appoint James as the first holder of this post. His duties will principally involve being with and assisting me on a range of civic engagements, starting very appropriately with the Remembrance Day commemorations.I am a strong supporter of the military and this appointment is a very positive way of emphasising the strong links between the Army, in particular, and the City of Winchester, which have endured over centuries. On a lighter note, I am sure that James will keep me in order, standing, as he does, some 6 inches above me!”
Cadet Sgt James Townley said, “I am very privileged to have been chosen to be the Mayor’s Cadet for Winchester. I am looking forward to my year standing alongside the Mayor with great anticipation.”
