Double success for Winchester Tourism

Winchester City Council is celebrating its success at the Beautiful South Awards for Excellence 2010. Winchester won a gold award in the Tourist Information Centre of the Year category and a silver award for Digital Marketing.

The annual Awards - organised by Tourism South East, the regional tourism body - are now in their 20th year and recognise exceptional levels of customer service and dedication to raising standards in the tourism industry.

A record number of entries to the prestigious awards led to an impressive shortlist. Awards were given in nineteen categories with the winners spread across the whole of the South East from Hampshire to Kent. The event was held at Mercedes-Benz World in Surrey on 21 October 2010 with the winners announced by BBC newsreader, Nicholas Owen, and Tourism South East Chairman, John Williams.

The City Council expressed it’s gratitude to Flagship Consulting and New Mind who, as co-nominees for the digital marketing award, kindly sponsored its table.

Ellen Simpson, Winchester City Council’s Head of Tourism, said: “We were delighted to come away on the night with, not just one, but two awards. Staff are delighted and have worked really hard to win these well deserved accolades. Winchester gave the loudest cheer in the room when the results were announced.”

Cllr Dominic Hiscock, Winchester’s City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Economic Prosperity, added: “We are absolutely thrilled that the excellent tourism service in Winchester has been recognised in this way. The judges commented on the team’s innovative digital marketing techniques including social networking, mini campaign sites and video content. Our Tourist Information Centre will now go on to compete nationally at the EnjoyEngland Awards to be held in the Great Hall in Birmingham on 15 April 2011.”

Winchester Tourist Information Centre is open from 10am to 5pm Monday. Phone 01962 840 500, email tourism@winchester.gov.uk or visit www.visitwinchester.co.uk
