New fitness scheme will soon be up and running

Winchester City Council will be launching a new running group at Winchester Sports Stadium this July as part of a national campaign to get people into running.

Run in England Group Leader, Laura Payne, will be launching a new Winchester Run In England beginner’s group with the intention to encourage brand new runners take up the sport. She said: "Everyone is welcome to join, regardless of age, fitness, or ability. The groups are targeted at anyone who is striving to lead a healthier lifestyle. If you fancy a new challenge, whilst making friends and getting fit, these groups could provide the perfect solution."

Each week, there will also be the opportunity to discuss running related topics including stretching, nutrition, cross-training, what to wear and how to avoid injury.

Lucille Thompson, Winchester City Council’s Portfolio Holder for Communities said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for any adult wishing to try out jogging for the first time. Participants will also benefit from using the wonderful new eight lane athletics track at the Winchester Sports Stadium. I am proud that we are able to offer these sessions to local residents and look forward to seeing this activity grow in Winchester over the coming weeks’

The England Athletics Run in England scheme is launching hundreds of schemes across the country. It is aiming to provide everyone with the opportunity to take some regular exercise in a safe, friendly, and non-competitive environment.

For an annual membership of £20, all members will receive a technical running T shirt, water bottle, training log and quarterly newsletters, along with discounted prices at local running shops.

The first session will take place on Wednesday 7th July at Winchester Sports Stadium. The first ‘trial’ session will be free of charge.
