Walk off into the Winchester Sunset this Valentine’s Day

Winchester Tourism is encouraging local residents to take advantage of the spectacular skies that grace the city just before dusk with the help of a self-guided trail called Sunset.

The new leaflet is being released in time for Valentine’s Day and it’s hoped that, after treating themselves to the spectacular views that the walk affords, people will go on to dine at one of Winchester’s many high-quality eateries.

Ellen Simpson, Tourism Marketing and Development Manager for Winchester City Council, explained: “This is part of on ongoing campaign to help local people find new ways to enjoy the city. There’ll be a national PR campaign tying in to Valentine’s Day to attract visitors too, but the sunsets are spectacular year round for residents and those on a ‘staycation’. The sunsets in the last few weeks have been so breathtaking that we’ve added an online sunset gallery on the www.visitwinchester.co.uk homepage.”

Alison Woods, Winchester City Council’s Tourist Information Centre Manager, added: “We’re hoping that this initiative will raise the profile of some of the city based eateries that have recently won a Hampshire Hospitality Award. The leaflet also includes helpful information regarding the accessibility of restaurants listed: this is part of our continued efforts to make Winchester a more accessible place to live and visit as we build up to the London Olympic and Paralympic Games in 2012. ”

Winchester City Council’s Leader Cllr George Beckett, who holds the Portfolio for Economy and Tourism, said: “One of the Council’s highest priorities is to support local businesses as we recover from a difficult time for the economy. The tourism team has been looking for ways to promote the city’s evening economy, especially during the quieter winter months. Winchester is one of the most beautiful heritage cities in England and this campaign unites the special qualities of our cityscape with a more modern offering at our eateries, in one customer-focussed campaign.”
