Winchester Community Safety Partnership tackles Christmas Purse Theft

Winchester Cathedral Christmas Market and Ice Rink attract visitors to our Historic City from all across the South. With all the rushing around to find the perfect present and getting into the party spirit it is easy to get lost in the magic of the festive season, but unfortunately for some this can be the perfect distraction.

Throughout December members of the Winchester Community Safety Partnership (WCSP) will be taking a proactive approach to preventing purse theft in the City as part of a wider Campaign. Over the next few weeks the Partnership will be offering advice about keeping your valuables safe throughout one of Winchester’s busiest times and they will also be handing out Lanyards and ‘Jingle Bells’ to make your purse or wallet more secure. The Lanyards and Jingle Bells can be attached to purses or wallets or the lanyard can even be attached to an individual’s trousers or handbag.

Cllr Lucille Thompson Portfolio Holder for Communities commented "It is important that as a partnership we continue to raise awareness about the risk of purse theft to shoppers and visitors to the city’ She continued ‘Winchester is a very safe place to visit but unfortunately one incident can ruin someone’s Christmas. The Partnership hopes that by taking simple precautions members of the public can reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime by unscrupulous thieves."
