History comes alive at the Westgate

Be transported back in history and join Civil War soldiers as they lay siege to the Westgate, one of Winchester’s ancient gateways.

On Sunday 15 February, from 11am to 4pm, a re-enactment of the siege of the Westgate by the Sealed Knot will bring pikemen, musketeers, artillery and camp followers into the centre of Winchester.

Come and try out the soldiers’ weapons, learn to drill and find out more about life as a soldier during the English Civil War. There will also be cannon to support the garrison and the gun captain and crew will demonstrate the loading and firing of this awesome piece of artillery.

Commenting on the event, Sher Kent from Winchester City Council’s Museum Service, said:

“There will be a full programme of activities on the day, including displays of musket and pike drills and cannon-firing, as well as a small living his
tory display. The children love having a go at military drill, and it is always fascinating to watch the manoeuvres of the Sealed Knot brigades.  It’s a day full of colour and participation, with more than a whiff of gunpowder.”

Cllr Patricia Stallard, portfolio holder for heritage, culture and sport, added:

“The Westgate museum contains weapons and armour from the Civil War and it is fascinating to see history brought alive once more in and around our ancient city gateway. This promises to be an exciting day – and it’s all completely free.”

No booking required – just turn up on the day.  For more details contact Winchester Museums museums@winchester.gov.uk or visit www.winchester.gov.uk/heritage
