City Space promises a ‘Butterfly Summer’
Press Release: 28/07/2008
The new family-oriented exhibition opening at City Space in Winchester Discovery Centre this week brings summer into the city centre. ‘Butterfly Summer’ features work by local artists inspired by butterflies and the environment they inhabit, particularly the areas of chalk downs that form much of the landscape around Winchester. The work on display will include watercolours, oils, prints and jewellery.
The exhibition has been put together by Winchester City Council’s museums service in partnership with the Hampshire and Isle of White branch of UK Butterfly Conservation. It includes a display highlighting the valuable work of the butterfly charity, together with lots of fascinating facts about butterflies, plus a few moths for added value! Visitors can find out what UK Butterfly Conservation is all about; examine the life cycle of the butterfly, and discover ways to help protect this fascinating creature in the Winchester area.
Throughout this summer exhibition there will be plenty to do for the whole family, from butterfly puzzles, games and quizzes for children of all ages, to testing your skill and knowledge of butterflies to see if you have what it takes to be a Butterfly Summer Ranger.
There will also be a series of interesting butterfly talks each Saturday from 26 July to the 23 August at 2pm.You can then take the opportunity to see the real thing by joining one of the many guided walks of Magdalene Hill Down Butterfly Reserve organised by the Hampshire and Isle of Wight branch of Butterfly Conservation every Sunday and Wednesday from the 27 July to 20 August. Further information is available in the exhibition.
There will also be two butterfly printmaking workshops for children (suggested age 8-12 years) run by local artist Daphne Vaughan on Tuesday 29 and Wednesday 30 July. There will be a charge of £20 per workshop and places are limited so book early. Call in at City Space in the Discovery Centre or telephone 01962 873 610 for details.
Butterfly Summer runs from Saturday 26 July until Sunday 31 August.
