Council Leader expresses sadness at the death of former councillor
Cllr George Beckett Leader of Winchester City Council has expressed sadness following the death of former Winchester City Councillor Patricia Edwards.
Cllr Beckett said “I remember well Mrs Edward’s firm but fair handling of the Planning Committee between 1983 and 1994, it must be said that she balanced her concern for the development of Winchester and its district with her desire to let every opinion be heard.
“It is a measure of the respect in which she was held that people involved in planning still refer in complementary terms to the period of her Chairmanship, over ten years after it finished. Her care for Winchester’s environment and future continued to show in her Chairmanship of the City of Winchester Trust. She will be missed, and citizens of Winchester owe her a debt of gratitude.”
Mrs Patricia Edwards was elected as a Conservative Member of St Paul’s Ward in June 1973 where she remained in office until May 1996.
She was Chairman of the Planning Committee for 11 consecutive years, from 1983-1994. She was also involved with other Committees, such as, Policy and Resources Committee and Traffic and Engineering Committee.
