Artist to make new film in Denmead

Susanna Wallin, an exciting London based film-maker, has been commissioned to work with young people in Denmead.

Susanna will be working with the members of Denmead Youth Theatre who are aged 8 – 16 years.  This will be a first taste of working with a professional film maker for the young people.  Together with their drama tutor, Tamara Groen, the children and Susanna will make a 5 – 10 minute film which will be screened in venues around Hampshire as part of a project to increase skills and access for film-making.

Susanna, originally from Sweden, studied Film and Video at London College of Printing and did her Masters in Visual Art and Theory at Goldsmiths University. She has made several outstanding films for broadcast as well as independent distribution and is currently Visiting Lecturer at the University of The Arts in London. Susanna says:

“In my films I work with people from wide-ranging communities in every day settings, creating new worlds which they inhabit and a sense of magic realism on screen. I feel this project offers great possibilities and scope. I’ve met the young people once and they’ve already made a big impression on me; there are some real talents in the group and I think we’re going to make something great together."

Tamara Groen added: “The young people are so excited at the prospect of making a film – they are already bursting with ideas and energy and can’t wait to see the end results on the big screen.”

Susanna will also be working in Havant with young people and a local community film group, and expects to complete filming in the area in February 2008.

Winchester City Councillor for Denmead, Cllr Patricia Stallard is also Portfolio Holder for Culture, Media and Sport.  She is delighted that the project is taking place in the village:

“This is a brilliant way to give new experiences and skills to young people.  The arts are a great resource for developing life skills in particular, such as confidence, communication and team working, whilst enjoying access to creative opportunities. It is experiences such as these which will help to create the region’s film makers of the future”

Denmead Youth Theatre is one of a group of youth theatres in the Winchester District (Winchester Rural Youth Theatres) managed by Winchester’s Theatre Royal and funded by Winchester City Council and Hampshire County Council.

The Film Project is funded by a partnership of local councils in Hampshire and Arts Council England, South East, and managed by Winchester City Council.
