Chinese delegation visits the City Museum
The City Museum played host last week to a prestigious group of visiting archaeologists from China. They are in the UK as part of a training programme, which includes an overseas study tour, for senior staff from archaeological institutes and conservation organisations from all over China. Whilst in the UK they have visited the British Museum, Cambridge University, the Institute of Archaeology, Oxford and Stonehenge.
The group spent a day at the Textile Conservation Centre at Southampton University's Winchester campus and were later given a tour of the City Museum by Winchester City Council's principal curator, Dr Geoff Denford, who said, "We were delighted to have a group of such eminent colleagues tour the museum. We took the opportunity to let them know how to access our artefacts via our new collections website at www.winchestermuseumcollections.org.uk "
Cllr Patricia Stallard, Winchester City Council's portfolio holder for culture, heritage and sport, was on hand to meet the archaeologists and commented, "Having taught students from China and having visited some of their awesome archaeological sites, it is a pleasure to welcome this group and to show them some of our own wonderful heritage here at the City Museum."
