People and Places - sculpture and landscape
Guildhall Gallery, Winchester, from Friday 25 August to Thursday 14 September 10.00 - 5.00pm Monday to Saturday, Sunday 12noon - 5.00pm
Sculptor Averil Marks and landscape artist Anny Spilberg will be showing their work in the Guildhall Gallery from Friday 25 August to Thursday 14 September.
Anny began painting in oils four or five years ago and immediately fell in love with the medium utilising its texture and colour to the maximum. She currently finds herself pre-occupied with landscape, townscapes and seascapes many inspired by the small towns and fishing villages of the Brittany coast.
To describe her style she says "I try to imagine the paintings working as abstracts; coloured shapes seen from a distance or through half closed eyes…"
She has exhibited at many venues including the Lipinski Gallery, Shere, Nogg's Gallery, Haslemere, and currently at the Jennifer Gerard Gallery in Abingdon.
Averil Marks studied sculpture at St Martin's School of Art and is a founder member of the Surrey Guild of Craftsman. Her main fascination is with the human figure and "its ability to express emotion silently". Her work includes groups of figures as well as individuals ranging from a few centimetres in height to life size. One particular seated individual has even been spotted as a frequent companion in the front passenger seat of her car!
Her work has been shown at the Guild Gallery at Milford and frequently at other venues.
Anny and Averil first met while Averil was organising the Haslemere Artists Open Studio in 2004. This is their first joint exhibition.
