They're Back! - Vikings at the City Museum
A group of local Vikings will set up camp at the City Museum during half term - Thursday 27, Friday 28 and Saturday 29 October from 10.00 am - 5.00pm, but don't worry we are not expecting any trouble!
Members of the local branch of The Vikings Re-Enactment Society will be coming along to show us what life was like 1000 years ago. Present will be Valgard a Viking warrior and Katla his lady. During the fun interactive sessions you will also be able to handle replica objects from the period - try on Viking helmet for size, hold a sword or battleaxe or grind flour with a quernstone; as well as finding out all about life in Viking Winchester.
In the Wintanceaster Gallery in the City Museum are spectacular discoveries from Anglo-Saxon and Viking times from the city. Look out for the hogsback gravestone of Gunni the Viking. Spot the Viking runestone and the Sigmund stone which shows a scene from the Viking saga of Sigmund and the wolf. Fine jewellery and silver coins from the time are also on display, together with more everyday items like a child's shoe, bone combs and gaming pieces.
Cllr. Therese Evans, Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport said, "This is a wonderful opportunity for the whole family to find out more about the Viking time in Winchester. Last year's event was a great success with record numbers attracted to the City Museum in The Square, Winchester".
