Faded Fountains Future

The Middle Brook Street Fountain is about to get a new lease of life. Winchester City Council has decided that the tired looking fountain has no future and it is time to make better use of the space.

The raised seating will remain as it is a popular area for people to sit whilst out shopping; the centre will be filled in and attractively block paved, transforming it into a feature space for the city.

The new feature area will have the facility for a flag pole in the centre to allow for the display of banners and flags promoting events in the city, this will also allow for a Christmas tree to be sited there over the festive period.

The blocked paved surface will be able to be used as a stage for street theatre and performance throughout the year and especially at festivals such as the Hat Fair. Access points to electricity will also be incorporated to allow for lights, music and PA systems to be used during performances.

Cllr Richard Knasel, Portfolio Holder for Economy and Transport said "The machinery in the fountain has now failed and so provides us with an opportunity for the city. We hope that the area will become a focal point for residents where they can not only sit but also be informed and entertained"

It is expected that work will start on the redevelopment of the fountain in early December.
