Grants awarded to local groups
Six local community groups have received awards from Winchester City Council's Community Chest Grants scheme.These latest awards bring the total number of organisations supported by the scheme to thirty-four since it was launched in April 2004, with the total value of the grants in excess of £12,000.
The Community Chest provides funding for small grants up to £500 to local community and voluntary groups across the Winchester District with the criteria focused on six themes - Arts, Community Development, Community Safety, Heritage, Sports and Town Twinning.
The latest awards were made to Bishops Waltham Guides Association - £250 towards disabled access improvements for the hut; Denmead War Memorial Hall - £250 towards new storage facilities in the main hall; Jubilee Rovers Junior Football Club, North Boarhunt - £265 towards new training equipment for the junior teams; Soberton Village Hall - £336 to replace 20 year old curtains in the main hall; Swanmore Village Hall - £447 to mark out the car pack, improving access & parking for disabled visitors and the Community Bus; and Winchester-based TAdance - £250 towards the set up costs for this new dance group for adults with mobility impairments.
Cllr Therese Evans, Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Culture, Heritage and Sport said this was the first year of the Community Chest Scheme. "It has been a very successful way of contributing to small local projects which are very important to communities across the District," she added.
