Ancient craft of Medieval badge making at the Hat Fair
Press Release: 14/06/2005
Winchester City Council's Museum Service will be hosting the medieval craft of pilgrim badge making in The Square on Saturday 2 July.
These popular demonstrations of the medieval craft of pewter pilgrim badge making will take place throughout the day outside the City Museum, using 15th century clothing and tentage and using authentic techniques, tools and materials.
Pilgrim badges were in many ways the first mass-produced souvenirs and were sold to visitors at sites of pilgrimage as a token or 'sign' the person had undertaken a pilgrimage. Visitors to the stall will be able to purchase for the first time a specially commissioned St. Giles Pilgrim Badge, a replica of a badge displayed in the Medieval Gallery of the museum.
This event is free and no booking is required.
