Mayors hanged at the Guildhall!

The Mayor of Winchester, Cllr Cecily Sutton, has overseen the hanging of four city mayors in the Mayor's Parlour at the Guildhall!

But Cllr Sutton was not taking the law into her own hands - she was overseeing the hanging of her own Mayoral portrait and those of her three predecessors.

The photographic portraits of Cllr Therese Evans (2001-2002), Cllr John Steel (2002-2203), Cllr Jean Hammerton (2003-2004) and the present Mayor, Cllr Cecily Sutton (2004-2005), will join other images of Winchester first citizens dating back to the 1830's. All the portraits are the responsibility of Winchester City Council's Museum Service.

"The Mayor's Parlour in the Guildhall is an oak panelled room steeped in history, providing a wonderful setting for the new portraits," said the current Mayor.

The room is now available to the public for bookings following the close of the Winchester District Local Plan enquiry, which has been used as the administration centre for the past year.

For further information about the room please contact the Guildhall on 01962 840820, fax 01962 878458 or email guildhall@winchester.gov.uk
