Hear all about Winchester's history

New audio guides telling the story of Winchester will be launched at the City Museum in the Square on Tuesday 1 June. Students from the Wessex Language Centre will be amongst the first to try out the guides, which are available in French and Spanish as well as English.

Winchester City Council’s Museums Service has worked with award-winning Antenna Audio to create tours that provide an introduction to the City’s history in sound.

“Many people come to Winchester because of its history, and we felt more should be done to welcome and inform visitors from other European countries” said Ken Qualmann, Head of Winchester Museums.

“But the main purpose of the guides is to offer a new way to tour the museum. Audio information enhances enjoyment of our collections for those who find traditional text labels difficult or uninspiring.”

The guides contain 60 minutes of commentary, but allow the visitor to create their own tour of the City’s history by offering different levels of information. Choose, for example, a chronological approach, or find out more about your favourite objects.

The guide costs £2 for adults and is free for under 16s. Entry to the City Museum is free.
