New look, new menu for Winchester Guildhall’s Courtyard Café

The popular Courtyard Café managed by national caterers Milburns Restaurants at Winchester Guildhall has just undergone a £100k refurbishment. The modernised café has now reopened, promising a fresh new look combined with a traditional atmosphere, appealing to everyone.

Complementing the café is the Broadway Bean, a new takeaway coffee point on Winchester’s sweeping Broadway. This will enable passers by to enjoy a quick coffee or snack as they stroll into town. For the first time at the Guildhall, which is owned and managed by Winchester City Council, Fairtrade beverages will be available at both at the Courtyard Café and the Broadway Bean.

Michael Flaherty, general manager for Milburns said, "The Courtyard Café appeals to Winchester residents and visitors alike and I know they enjoy our delicious, well presented food. The main improvements following the refurbishment include better service facilities and a new menu with emphasis on food prepared from the freshest ingredients."

Highlights of the new lunch menus prepared by Head Chef Jane Bell include steamed escalope of salmon with lemon hollandaise, steamed chicken with white beans and mustard grilled pork chop with roasted apricot and tarragon jus. Freshly made sandwiches, salads and fajitas are available as a lighter option.

There is a daily choice of homemade desserts including apple pie, chocolate mousse and lemon tart. In the afternoon visitors can be tempted with a delicious selection of homemade cakes, biscuits and flapjacks. The café is also serving an afternoon cheese plate for those preferring something savoury.

Fairtrade beverages - tea, coffee, hot chocolate and orange juice - are now available both at the Courtyard Café and the Broadway Bean. The Fairtrade scheme enables third world producers to get a fair price for their produce. This covers production costs, along with a premium that the Fairtrade organisation reinvests either in business, social or environmental schemes.

Situated at the heart of one of England’s most beautiful historic cities, Winchester Guildhall was built in 1871 and over the years has been home to Winchester’s law courts, museums, library and police station. In 1985 the Guildhall underwent an extensive refurbishment combining the old with the new to create a modern conference venue within an historic building. The Guildhall now offers an attractive combination of function rooms, ranging in size and character, all furnished to a high standard and equipped with modern facilities.

The Courtyard Café is open 9.00am to 5.00pm Monday to Sunday. The Broadway Bean is open from 8.00am to 5.00pm from Monday to Saturday. The café is also available in the evening for special events and private functions.
