This page explains how managed by Winchester City Council uses any information you give to us, and the ways in which we protect your privacy.

The Data Protection Act

Under the Data Protection Act, we have a legal duty to protect any information we collect from you. We use leading technologies and encryption software to safeguard your data, and keep strict security standards to prevent any unauthorised access to it. We do not pass on your details to any third party unless you give us permission to do so or if we are required to do so by law.

Third parties

The information we collect may be shared between City Council services and with other organisations, such as government bodies, the Police, health and social care organisations.

We will only share your personal information when we are permitted to or are required to by law or we have your consent to do so as required by the Data Protection Act.

The City Council does not pass personal data to other organisations for marketing purposes without your consent.

Your personal information may be processed by an external service provider acting on our behalf to provide services.

What information do we collect?

We currently collect two kinds of information from visitors to through emails to departments and an on-page feedback form, and site usage information, from session cookies and log files.


i) Comments and questions

If you send an email asking for information, we may pass your personal details to another Department of the Council to reply direct to you. If your question is technical, we may need to pass it to our technology suppliers. We do not pass any of your personal information to third parties when dealing with your enquiry, unless you have given us permission to do so.

Site usage information

i) Cookies

Cookies are pieces of data created when you visit a website. The cookies our site uses are "session cookies", which store some of your "preferences" while you move around the site. ii) Log files

Log files allow us to record visitors' use of the site. Winchester City Council puts together log file information from all our visitors, which we use to make changes to the layout of the site and to the information in it, based on the way that visitors move around it.
