New - The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015

The Smoke and Carbon Monoxide Alarm (England) Regulations 2015 are being introduced for England to ensure that premises let for residential purposes are safe for the people living in them.

With some exceptions the law, which comes in to play on October 1 states that all private landlords must install at least one working smoke alarm on every floor of their property as well as a carbon monoxide detector in rooms with a solid fuel appliance.

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service is encouraging all landlords to act now to ensure they are ready for new legislation which is aimed at saving dozens of lives a year. Failure to comply could result in penalties of up to £5000.

To help landlords gear up for the new regulations, Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service has been given a limited supply of free smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors which we are prioritising for landlords who house vulnerable people

Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service have developed an online form for landlords to complete, to determine whether they are eligible for a free appliance. The online form can be completed at http://www.hantsfire.gov.uk/rented-homes.

Statistically people are four times more likely to die in a fire in the home if there is no working smoke alarm and over the next 10 years it is estimated that the new laws will result in 231 fewer deaths and 5,860 less injuries.
